WHEN DID MASERATI START?
Officine Alfieri Maserati SA was founded in Bologna, Italy, in December 1914 by three brothers: Alfieri, Ettore, and Ernesto Maserati. They were the sons of railroad worker Rodolfo Maserati. It was through railroad working that Rodolfo Maserati found a passion for speed and precision engineering, which he handed down to his sons.
At first, the company started by making spark plugs, and made devices for aircraft engines during World War I. Alfieri Maserati drove race cars for other automakers before he and his two brothers decided to produce the first Maserati vehicle, named the
Tipo 26. The Maserati emblem, which is modeled after the trident held by Neptune in Roman mythology, was designed by a fourth brother.
